Answering questions about
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
What is PRP
Platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) is recognized as a safe and effective therapy for regenerative skin healing and rejuvenation, utilizing autologous blood enriched with various growth factors. When applied to your face, you will see affects such as:
- Improvements noted in skin pore size and texture
- Wrinkle reduction and notable firmness
- Pigmented spots
- Collagen density
- Hyaluronic acid levels
- Protection against ultraviolet damage
Why PRP at ARA
This is probably the most important thing to note when deciding whether to get PRP at a spa. The kit they use matters. Many spas ultilize test tube kits that yield maybe 1-2x baseline… that’s basically putting your drawn blood just back on your skin!! Definitely not worth your money.
At ARA we hold a high standard and offer a kit that provides the highest concentrations of deliverable platelets (>90%) with its double-spin technology. So what does that mean? Instead of the typical test tube system, this system provides you with anywhere from 6-8x baseline. So definitely worth your investment.
What to expect in my appointment with PRP
At ARA we offer PRP as an add on to SkinPen Microneedling. Like a normal ARA treatment, we will get you checked in and let you get comfortable in the treatment room.
While Abby is cleansing and numbing your skin, our nurse will come in to prep your arm for a sterile blood draw. After acquiring the blood, we will sterilely process and prepare your PRP. After you're fully numb, we will start Microneedling your PRP into your skin.
With the nature of some retained RBCs in your PRP, your face will have a slight red tinge. Abby will provide you with the post op care sheet and that concludes the service.
Is PRP Painful
Short answer, no! The “painful” parts of PRP is the insertion of the needle for the blood draw. At ARA we try to make you as comfortable as possible for this part of the treatment. For the SkinPen portion, we are numbing you so you shouldn’t feel a thing!
Can anyone receive PRP
Sadly, no. Not everyone is able to book a PRP service at ARA. Before booking, Abby and her nurse review your health history prior to you scheduling an appointment to make sure it’s safe and effective for you.
Before and After PRP Care
Before Care:
- 1 Week Before: Stop taking blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen, Advil, or Aleve), and supplements like Turmeric, Vitamin E or Omega-3s to reduce bruising risk.
- 3 to 5 Days Before: Avoid harsh topical skin care products, including retinoids, chemical exfoliants, and active acids (AHAs/BHAs).
- On Day of Appointment: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
After Care:
- First 24 Hours: Do not wash your face to let the growth factors fully absorb.
- 24 to 72 Hours Post Op: Avoid heavy sweating, strenuous exercise, saunas, hot showers, and direct heat exposure. Do not take anti-inflammatory medications, as mild inflammation is necessary for the healing and collagen-building process.
- 3 to 7 Days After: Stick to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and a hydrating, basic moisturizer (like hyaluronic acid). Avoid all retinoids, vitamin C, and physical or chemical exfoliants.
Sun Protection: Avoid direct sunlight for at least 7 to 10 days. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+sunscreen daily once your provider clears you to apply topicals.
How many services do I need to see results?
We recommend 3-4 SkinPen Microneedling + PRP Services over 4 to 6 weeks apart to see optimal results
Are there studies to prove the effectiveness of PRP
